My approach to stone sculpting is simple. I carve directly into the stone without a preconceived notion
of what to carve. I work without sketches or clay models. I start by chipping away at the stone and at some point an impression of what the sculpture will be slowly begins to emerge in my mind.
At this juncture, I do not spend a lot of time thinking about what the piece is going to be. I have found that the faster I work and the less I think about what is emerging, the more defined the
rough sculpture becomes. My guess is that the end result is a combination of my life experiences, my carving skill, and the millions of years it took the stone to find it's way to my stand.
I make no claim that I understand how this approach works. I do believe the stone and I speak to each other on some primordial level and what we have to say is reflected in the sculpture. I know my method is unothodox, but I am convinced that it
allows for the unique nature of my work. Each piece is one-of-a-kind and defies easy duplication. While my methodology may seem simplistic, the end result is oftentimes a complex struggle beteween the unforgiveing nature of the stone and my creative efforts to shape it. For a
short period of time the stone and I create a bond, which if I successfully exploit, expresses itself in the final sculpture
